PROJECT OVERVIEW

A steep front slope was creating ongoing erosion and limiting how the property could be used. During heavy rains, gravel and soil washed toward the street, while one of the property's two driveways was too steep for practical vehicle and trailer access. The homeowner also needed safer connections between the house, mailbox, and planned garage.

Terra Works approached these challenges as part of one coordinated site improvement. A retaining wall was constructed to help stabilize the primary slope, while new stairs, walkways, and a concrete driveway improved movement throughout the property. The work continued with a concrete connection to the future garage and the foundation slab for the new structure.

The result is a property that is more stable, accessible, and functional, turning a difficult portion of the site into usable space that better supports everyday life and plans.

the challenge

A steep front yard was creating more than an accessibility problem. During rainfall, gravel and soil were washing down the slope and into the street, while one of the property's two driveways had become too steep for practical use. Safe pedestrian access between the house, mailbox, and planned garage area was also limited.

our approach

We approached the property as a connected system rather than a series of isolated improvements. A retaining wall was constructed across the primary slope and extended along the right side to help stabilize the hillside. New stairs and a pathway established safer access to the mailbox, while a new concrete driveway transformed the previously difficult right-side approach into functional vehicle and trailer access.

A concrete walkway was also created between the residence and future garage, followed by the concrete foundation slab for the new structure.

the result

The transformation is ultimately about how the property functions. A once steep, eroding, and difficult-to-navigate area is now significantly more stable and usable. The homeowner can access the garage area by vehicle or trailer, walk safely between key areas of the property, and use a portion of the site that previously presented ongoing challenges.

The retaining wall also provides an important response to the property's erosion concerns, helping protect the slope from the repeated loss of soil and gravel during Hill Country rainfall.

WHAT MATTERED HERE

Creating long-term function from challenging terrain.

The retaining wall, driveway, stairs, walkways, and garage foundation each addressed a different need, but they all had to work together. Stabilizing the slope alone would not have solved the access problem, just as a new driveway would not have addressed the ongoing erosion.

By looking at how water moves, how vehicles enter the property, how people move between spaces, and how the future garage would connect to the home. We were able to approach the project as a coordinated improvement rather than a collection of individual tasks.
